How To Play Live Blackjack

Live blackjack plays out the same as standard blackjack. Also known as 21, the aim of blackjack is to end up with a total hand value that is closer to 21 than the dealer’s hand without going bust (over 21).

The dealer draws cards and deals 2 to each player face-up, they also deal two cards to themselves, but only one is face-up (the up-card), and the other is face-down (the hole card).

The player to the left of the dealer plays first. In blackjack, each player is against the dealer rather than against other players. So, if it’s your turn, you evaluate your hand to see your current value. All cards are worth their face value, except the royals, which are all worth 10, and the Aces, which can be worth 1 or 11.

You then decide whether to ‘Hit’ or ‘Stand’. The former sees the dealer draw you another card to add to your total, and the latter ends your turn with your current total.

If your total exceeds 21, you automatically lose your bet.

But if your total is 21 or below, the rest of the players have their turns, and then it’s the dealer’s turn. They reveal their hole card, and if they have a higher hand than players at this point, then those players lose. If not, then the dealer draws cards until they have a higher hand than other players or until they go bust. 

If the dealer goes bust, then any players still in the game win.

Hit

During a player’s turn, they can ‘Hit’, which means they want an additional card. The dealer draws another card to add to the player’s hand, increasing their total.

Double Down

Double down is where a player doubles their bet after being dealt their hand and receives just one additional card. Their turn ends after the card is dealt, with no option to hit again.

Stand

If a player chooses to stand, they are electing not to receive any further cards and to end their turn with the hand they currently have. 

Split

If a player has two of the same card from the initial deal, they can split the pair to play them as two separate hands. The player has to match their original bet on the new hand so that both hands are played for the same stake. 

They then receive 2 additional cards to complete each newly formed hand.

Insurance

Insurance is a side bet the player can place for half of the amount of their original stake if the dealer’s up-card is an Ace. The player is betting on the dealer’s hole card being a 10-value card, giving them a blackjack/natural (2 cards totalling 21). If the dealer does have a blackjack, then the player wins the side bet. 

Surrender

Surrender is an option only offered in some blackjack games. It’s when the player decides to fold/remove themselves from the round rather than play; they receive half of their total bet back and forfeit the other half. 

It is an option if a player thinks their hand is unlikely to win against the dealer’s, and they would rather cut their losses.

It’s important to note that some of these rules may change depending on the version of blackjack you are playing and the casino’s rules.
